Prior to living in the United Arab Emirates, we were told that alcohol and pork were banned. Many years ago, that holds true but these days you can have access to these items at various outlets.
Here are the top 3 places to find pork in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the U.A.E.
- Large Supermarket Chains (Spinneys, Waitrose, Choithrams, Organic Foods and Cafe, etc.) However the pork meat is often located in a private signposted section of the supermarket.
- Celebrations like Oktoberfest, its not a celebration without pork sausages!
- Hotel Restaurants – only hotel outlets can serve pork, you will not (should not) be able to find it at any fast food or restaurants outside of hotels. My latest go to #porkspot is at JB’s Gastropub in Amwaj Rotana in Dubai. Read on further about their super delicious PORK BOARD and much more!
JB’s Gastropub, Amwaj Rotana Hotel, Dubai, UAE
I was invited to JB’s Gastropub during the time I stayed at the Amwaj Rotana hotel. Located just on the lobby floor of the hotel, it was super convenient for hotel guests as well as anyone visiting Jumeirah Beach Road. The restaurant boasts of earthly tones with trees growing inside of the restaurant!
I feel the decor is one of the many aspects people love visiting this restaurant. From the wall art to vintage hallways and quirky posters, you can spend more time than you’d imagine appreciating their decor.
Like I said before, this has hands-down easily ranked as my go to #porkspot. The PORK board they brought to our table was epic. I haven’t had pork in a long while and I sure did get my pork fill from this visit. We shared the board with 3 people and there was more than enough to go around.
Their PORK board features the following:
- prosciutto
- smoked ham
- Spanish chorizo
- crispy pork grinds
- scotch egg
The scotch egg was truly amazing and cooked to perfection. #eggporn
What are Scotch Eggs? Scotch eggs are hard boiled eggs with sausage meat wrapped around it, coated in bread crumbs then baked and deep-fried! AMAZING
Recommendations
Other order-worthy recommendations are their Sausage by the METRE! That’s right 100 centimetres of sausage meat! Our table of 3 shared half a metre (50 cm) and there was still left overs! We tried the Lamb Merguez Half Metre Sausage with caramelized onions and condiments.
I could not resist their Mac and Cheese! Who says this is just for kids? Its quite a popular option at JB’s. Its so cheesy and delicious, pure comfort food and reminder of the good ol’ days. With 10 different options of Mac and Cheese (yes TEN!), I will have to come back to try out some more! This time we ordered the chicken sausage and it was divine.
For the desserts we had the lovely Crispy Bread Pudding Bites – tossed with cinnamon sugar served with custard. It was great for sharing, I just wish it came with a chocolate dipping! We also shared the Strawberry Yum Sundae at JB’s and it had it’s fair share of chocolate sauce! It was presented very beautifully but I felt there was too much whip cream and not enough ice cream.
